The month we finally started the hallway renovation.
April has been a mixed bag: sun through the windows mean it’s finally warm enough to open the shutters, one victory in the kitchen, and a wall discovery that is threatening the whole hallway project. Georgian charm though, eh?
Progress Peek:
We finally found a Victorian servants’ bell board to hang in the kitchen, just like there would have been in the 17- and 1800s. It doesn’t work, which is a slight shame since there will be many a moment when I wish I could ring for John to bring me a glass of wine, but it looks the part and I feel like it adds more vintage charm to the room. Plus it’s a great talking point for when we next host!
Farmhouse Finds:
Palette pick: Mouse’s Breath by Farrow & Ball. This is a grey brown shade and I absolutely love it. It could potentially be quite dark in certain lights but I think it would look really farmhouse-y and give natural soothing vibes somewhere in our house.
A brand I’m loving: Sweet July. I discovered this small business on House Beautiful’s website just this week and I’m actually obsessed with their speckled ceramic cups. I may or may not be adding them to my basket as I type this…
In The Details:
John started tiling the hallway flooring this month, which looks absolutely cracking so far. If you’d like to see the progress, check out my story highlight which is under ‘hallway’ at the top of my Instagram page. The floor tiles have kindly been gifted to me by tile.co.uk and they’re the perfect look of original Georgian style that I was going for.
The flooring is currently about 60% done so I started peeling off wallpaper… and quickly realised why the last owner had wallpapered: to conceal a whole host of a shitshow. Uneven walls, blown plaster, and enough mould to grow a mushroom party. I guess this job is a little bigger than we originally thought.

Around The Farmhouse Table:
I asked you guys on my story, “What’s a tiny, random thing in your home that makes you really happy?”
It was difficult to choose only a few, but some of the best ones that you lovely folks said:
- “My pink velvet chair. It doesn’t go with anything but I don’t care!”
- “It’s crazy but I just stand in my bedroom doorway and look at the Lego city that I built.”
- “My grandmother’s silver. I love the connection to my family’s past!”
Looking Ahead:
Next up: The hallway panelling (but first fixing the wall disaster that revealed itself like a red flag contestant on Take Me Out.) Pray for us.
Until next month you beautiful bunch,
Shanice 🤍
